I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least”; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe — “That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which the will have. Government is at best but an expedient; but most governments are usually, and all governments are sometimes, inexpedient. The objections which have been brought against a standing army, and they are many and weighty, and deserve to prevail, may also at last be brought against a standing government. Their ineptitude came from helplessness, not malice.

He obtained money from the men who owned it, going from door to door - from the mahogany doors of bankers to the clapboard doors of lonely farmhouses. He never talked about the public good. Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?
The Master said, “To rule a country of a thousand chariots, there must be reverent attention to business, and sincerity; economy in expenditure, and love for men; and the employment of the people at the proper seasons.”
Is it not delightful to have friends coming from distant quarters?
Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue.
Have no friends not equal to yourself.
When you have faults, do not fear to abandon them.
