Suicide in B flat is a meditation on the anxiety of inherited cultural influence, as well as a cryptic lament about the paradoxes of stardom. Written on the slipstream of dime-store mysteries and post-bop jazz, the play centers on Niles, an experimental composer at the end of creative streak who commits ritual “suicide” to free himself from the confines of his own legendary status. Like the real-life Miles Davis or Bob Dylan on whom he is based, Niles must find a way to “disappear” in order to recreate himself and keep his artistic vision alive.

L.A. nightlife auteur Ivan Kane, who also owns Deep, rolls the dice and comes up a winner with his salute to past and present American pop culture. This small bar that once housed funk-fueled hot spot Kane has been transformed into a retro-cool lounge reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy. The plush parlor features cushy lounge seating, while the horseshoe-shaped bar doubles as a runway for the burlesque dancers, who strut by in rhythm to every toe-tapping note played by the live jazz trio. Hollywood’s finest suits and sassiest sirens sip cocktails as they enjoy the intimacy of this cutting-edge cabaret.

Completely remodeled, the Bar Deluxe ditched its seedy past and has started a new life as a modern-day speakeasy. Erte-esque paintings and nude copper mannequins define the minimalist decor. The exposed brick wall behind the bar melds nicely with its backlit red bottles. Along with the look, this former hole-in-the-wall has expanded in width and is now three times its former size. A small DJ booth is tucked behind the adjacent lounge area: This is, after all, a venue which hosts rotating club nights–the biggest of which are the celeb-heavy Tuesday night parties.
